The Nintendo DS is a handheld game console with a dual screen, which is marketed and developed by Nintendo. The console was released in the year 2004 in the United States, Canada and Japan. The console has a similar clam shell design like the Game Boy Advance, and has two LCD screens facing inside, the bottom one being touch screen enabled.

The console features built in microphone and also supports Wi-Fi standards, therefore allowing short range (10-30 meters) interaction between players. The DS was the first console manufactured By Nintendo which was released in North America before it was launched in Japan.

The system was earlier named as Nitro. The abbreviations DS refer to “Developers System” referring to developers of the new games and “Dual Screen”, the most obvious feature which distinguishes it from other consoles.

On 2nd March, 2006, Nintendo launched the Nintendo-DS lite in Japan, which, was the remodeled version of the original Nintendo DS and was released in Europe, Australia and North America, later that year. The Nintendo DS lite is a lighter and slimmer version of the Nintendo DS and has a much brighter display. The older version of the Nintendo was affectionately referred to as Nintendo Phat in America.

On 2nd October, 2008, Nintendo launched the Nintendo DSi, which was another redesigned versions of the DS. It was launched on 1st of November, 2008 in Japan and in April 2009 in Europe, America and Australia.

The Nintendo-DS games use ROM “game card” formats which are similar to memory cards used in portable devices like digital cameras. The console supports cards which range from 8 to 256 MB in size.
